C'est la leçon à retenir des ravages d'une communication « dispersée ». Devant un parterre de parlementaires UMP, le 15 juillet, Nicolas Sarkozy avait déclaré que les « Irlandais devraient revoter ». Ingérence politique qui avait déclenché un tollé politique, médiatique et populaire en Irlande.
Après une visite de courtoisie à Dublin le 21 juillet dernier, où le Président avait plutôt joué « profil bas », au point que la presse irlandaise avait salué l'offensive de charme jugée « constructive » et « sans faux pas », le journal l'Examiner s'était même dit « séduit par le charme français ». L'Irish Times estimait, lui, « la journée de travail utile ». Bref, un bilan globalement positif…
Et pourtant, si l'on en croît un sondage commandé par le think tank openeurope et réalisé le lendemain du passage à Dublin, le compte n'y est pas. Ainsi, 71 % des Irlandais se disent aujourd'hui opposés à un nouveau référendum sur le traité de Lisbonne, alors que seulement 24 % des personnes interrogées sont favorables à la tenue d'un second référendum.
Alors que le « non » l'avait emporté à 53 %, aujourd'hui, ce sont aujourd'hui 62 % des Irlandais qui se déclarent prêts à voter « non » en cas de nouveau référendum. Si ces résultats sont à relativiser, deux chiffres viennent renforcer la position Irlandaise : 17 % des personnes qui ont voté « oui » voteraient « non » en cas de nouveau référendum, et 57 % des personnes n'ayant pas voté glisseraient également un bulletin « non » dans l'urne.
Preuve que quelques offensives de charme et arrangements à la marge n'y suffiront pas. Au contraire, à trop vouloir forcer la main des électeurs irlandais, les hommes politiques européens jouent contre leur propre camp et conduisent involontairement beaucoup de gens dans le camp du « non ». Et si Nicolas Sarkozy était finalement le meilleur allié du camp du « non » ? Une taupe, qui sait ?

Voici longtemps que je souhaitais vous écrire pour vous faire part de mon admiration. En mai 1981, à l'âge de 18 ans, ce fut pour moi la première fois que je pus exercer mes droits civiques à l'occasion de l'élection présidentielle. Malgré mon extrème jeunesse, c'est bien depuis 1974 que je suis votre parcours, en étant particulièrement admiratif de votre clairvoyance politique et de votre sagacité intellectuelle.
En 1978, à l'occasion des élections législatives, vous avez "fait un rêve pour la maison France". Pour ma part, j'ai souvent formé un rêve, sans jamais oser l'exprimer, celui d'avoir le privilège de vous rencontrer. J'ai bien sûr lu vos ouvrages et la perspective de pouvoir échanger avec vous sur votre vision de la société française en Europe serait pour moi une profonde satisfaction intellectuelle.
